Intro
Welcome back to the Pop A Pod On Podcast! I’m your host Mary-Jane Rewa and I’m so happy to be back wishing you a very happy new year! I hope that you have started the year the way you wanted to and that it brings you everything you want and need.
I have to apologise for my absence, as mentioned in my last episode, I started attending an Italian language school, with wildly mixed results, while also teaching English and I simply wasn’t organised. But new year new me, and I have a heap of great stuff to recommend you guys over the coming weeks…
This week I wanted to focus on three podcasts that I have found super inspiring over the past 12 months. There’s nothing like another perspective to give you that lil nudge, you know you need, to really start realising your deepest desires.
So in the words of Fergilicious, let’s get it started.
Recommendation 1: The Fader Uncovered
Today’s first recommendation is The Fader Uncovered with Mark Ronson.
For those that need a little intro, The Fader magazine has been a cultural beacon since its launch in 1999. It focuses its editorial content on profiling emerging creatives with a specific concentration on music. And if you don’t know who Mark Ronson is, he’s an award-winning producer, DJ, songwriter, who has worked with Titans in the industry like Amy Winehouse, Gaga, Sharon Jones and so many other wonderful artists.
In this podcast, Ronson interviews some of the formidable talents that have graced the cover of Fader magazine over the past 20 plus years. His guests are often friends, fellow musicians and they dig into what was happening around the time these artists appeared on the cover of The Faded. They talk creative processes, song development, the impact of relationships on creative decisions and pathways, whether professional or personal.... The common thread of hard work, seizing opportunities, and the ever-flowing highs and lows.
Ronson often recalls the lens through which he remembers or even listens to music… wearing either his DJ, or Producer hat, and for this reason, it makes the series really damn special. He clearly has a gift for hearing more than what most of us hear in music… making important connections to the industry/cultural backdrop of the time… and translating all of this into sharp observations or questions that even surprise the artists who made the music.
So I guess the question on everyone’s lips is, who can you expect to hear from?! Well, to date, Ronson has interviewed Pharrell, Questlove, the girls from Haim, Patrick Tame Impala, Kelis, Big Boi, Ty Dolla $ign… and so much more.
This is a podcast for anyone with even a cursory interest in the music industry over the past 20 years.
It’s a wonderful collection of winding conversations that are fascinating, discerning, and really blimmin inspiring.
Episodes are anywhere between 30 mins to over an hour long and are uploaded Mondays.
Recommendation 2: Founders Journal
It’s been a long time since I stepped foot in an office and worked a traditional 9-5 type job. There are some things I miss, and other things I never want to see or do ever again! Nevertheless, my curiosity for the world of business, technology, and innovation hasn’t waned.
One of the podcasts that have helped me remain connected to the world of business, is Founders Journal hosted by Alex Lieberman. Lieberman is the co-founder and Executive Chairman at Morning Brew, which if you’re unaware of it, started as a daily business newsletter tailored to students and has now grown into a media company, of which a majority stake was sold to Insider Inc. last year. It’s a HUGE success story at a time when media outlets are really struggling to keep their heads above water.
As impressive as Lieberman’s Morning Brew achievements are, so too is his podcast, which he refers to as his personal audio diary where he aims to provide “the tools to think better in order to build better.” It is a business podcast that packs a lot of punch… in a small parcel of time.
The diversity in content and engaging storytelling is the real key to my continued loyalty. To give you a wee idea, episodes have covered everything from:
Staff hiring, retention, and firing processes
How to approach strategy development
Managing anxiety
Identifying your strengths and weaknesses, and what to do with it!
Accountability
And Radical transparency in business
From scrutiny of operational business models
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle outside of work
Analysing the ways other business leaders operate
To Industry insights and so much more.
Lieberman often constructs mini case studies to help contextualise some of the concepts he talks on. The episodes are bursting with ideas, tips, anecdotes, and advice. Often challenging the listener to do something differently, making these 10-15 minute nuggets engaging, meaningful and valuable.
And while I don’t necessarily agree with or buy into everything Lieberman says, that is the beauty of this type of podcast. To encourage you to think differently, view ideas and concepts from an alternative perspective, stimulate your curiosity and inspire you to get on with building better.
If you are looking for some business inspo, this would be a great place to start. The ROI is impressive.
Episodes are uploaded 3 times a week, wherever you get your podcasts.
Recommendation 3: Flame Bearers
A lot of sporting events took place last year, arguably two of the most significant events were the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, it was the first time since I was a kid that I, like many, was able to sit down and watch the games, because Covid. And while there was a bit of controversy surrounding elements of the games last year, it was incredible to see some of the world’s best athletes, achieve some of their big audacious goals.
But for many athletes, especially some women athletes, the path to Tokyo was even more complicated and challenging than we could ever really know.
Enter today’s final podcast recommendation in the form of Flame Bearers. Hosted by Jamie Mittelman, this podcast shines a light on women Olympic and Paralympic athletes from all over our wonderous globe. Mittelman interviews athletes, coaches, and other experts highlighting the very real challenges and often near impossible barriers standing in the way of some of these athletes achieving their dreams.
Covering topics from the athlete’s mindset, to access to funding, competing with cultural expectations and societal constructs, to training and coaching environments.
This podcast shines a light on the very real, mountainous physical and emotional terrain encountered on their journey to Tokyo.
As you can imagine these stories are at times disappointing, at others completely and utterly infuriating, but ultimately triumphant. It’s a show that makes you think, enough with your excuses, get out there and fight for what you want. If I had 1% of the courage and determination these women possess, I’d be a really happy chappy.
Aaand in other good news, the complete back catalogue is available wherever you listen to your podcasts, with the latest episode having been uploaded in November 2021. Episodes run around 10 – 30 minutes long.
