Intro

Welcome to the Pop A Pod On Podcast, your weekly dose of podcast recommendations. I’m your host, Mary-Jane Rewa and I firstly must apologise for last weeks lapse in uploading, I started an Italian immersion class and had work, so things just got a little out of control! But this week I am back, I cover business, history, sleeping and the human experience. So let’s not waste any time and get into this weeks recommendations.

Recommendation 1: Business Wars

Today’s first recommendation is another cracker of a poddy by Wondery called Business Wars.

Business Wars is a fascinating podcast where host David Brown takes us on many a journey, analysing famed business rivalries. Each rivalry is examined over the course of a few episodes typically around 3-4, so it’s not a one-episode wonder. We are treated to some solid deep dive insight that at a minimum would satisfy the casual listener and potentially prompt the time-rich, super curious into rabbit holes.

While it leans on some of the characteristic Wondery-style re-enactments, which for me personally are a bit, give or take, the content is excellent and the overarching style of the podcast is really refreshing. It provides a wonderfully modern perspective on some of the biggest brands and players in modern business history.

Rivalries covered since the podcast’s inception have included enduring rivalries such as: Pepsi vs Coca Cola, McDonalds vs Burger King, Ferrari vs Lamborghini, and Nike vs Adidas. As well as other, not so enduring rivalries like Blackberry vs Apple and Netflix vs Blockbuster. It also examines more modern rivalries like Facebook vs Snapchat, Uber vs Lyft, Tik Tok vs Instagram, and Amazon vs Walmart.

By breaking down timelines, simplifying typical business-related themes, and removing jargon, Business Wars is an easy, fascinating listen and a podcast I look forward to every week.

Currently in its fifth season, episodes are about 25-30 minutes long and are released weekly on Wednesdays.

Recommendation 2: The Deep

Today’s second episode is The Deep. The Deep is hosted by Zoe Marshall. Zoe is an Australian media practitioner, who after having experienced her own personal trauma and abuse, found herself, in her words, cracked open, and instinctively curious about the lives of others.

In this podcast, Zoe interviews people from all walks of life discussing, with true candour, their lived experiences and how they themselves traversed their own trauma or how they navigated experiences beyond prescriptive societal norms, and lots lots more.

Zoe is clearly a people person. Her guests seemingly come prepared to go deep. And the result is a truly personal, at times enlightening, at other times achingly painful, but ultimately moving listening experience. I’m not gonna lie, I’ve shed a few tears listening to this podcast. Though, I am a proficient crier.

And so, what types of topics have been covered in over 60 episodes of The Deep? Well, the answer could realistically, what hasn’t been covered. But, let me get a little specific. Zoe has spoken to:

  • JMo (Jonathan Moran), a very well-known, perhaps notorious, Australian gossip columnist about ethics/morality in gossip journalism, as well as his personal relationship with depression

  • Swingers

  • An endometriosis warrior

  • An Only Fans star

  • A mum, who is also a functioning heroin addict

  • An environmental extremist…. And this list really is a very brief snapshot…

As you can imagine, some of the subject matter can get pretty heavy, and there are moments of lightness. But Zoe’s warmth and genuine nature really shine through. She treats each guest and challenging topics equally, with a great deal of respect, and the greatest of care.

Episodes are uploaded weekly on Mondays and run for about an hour. While fascinating, episodes often come with a content warning, so if you yourself may find some types of content or topics triggering, check the show notes before jumping into episodes.

At the end of the day, this podcast serves as a good reminder that most people we meet are going through, or have been through stuff and that we really should be guided by kindness.

Recommendation 3: Tracks to relax

Today’s final recommendation is for those out there who struggle to fall asleep at night. Who need a little help winding down… a distraction from the worries of today, and the maybes of tomorrow… The miracle podcast, well at least for me, is Tracks To Relax.

Tracks to Relax is bound to be a little polarising, I mean you either need something like this, or you don’t. And you also need to vibe with the host or voice, in this case, master hypnotist, Alan.

Tracks to Relax is my go-to podcast when I am wound as tight as a wind-up toy, and need to decompress to fall asleep. As the title infers, each episode is a track to help you, the tired and weary, relax, and get those well-deserved and much-desired Z’s.

Each episode, or session, of Tracks to Relax is different. From benign extremely boring stories that go nowhere to sessions based on the sounds of nature, and guided sleep meditations where you’re coached? I’m not sure that is the right word, but let’s go with it, coached to help your body fall asleep from your toes up to your head. This type is my favourite. And was honestly a lifesaver when I was living life at full capacity.

It took me a while to find what worked for me, but now that I know what works, I have it downloaded in my app, and know where to find my track.

Now, a quick hint for those interested in trying this lil poddy, I strongly suggest set your timer to turn off the podcast at the end of an episode or 30-60 mins into an episode. There is nothing worse than waking up to a strange, perhaps, not so soothing voice, from a different podcast or ad, just as you have managed to dose off. Starting from scratch can be even more stressful!

There are over 60 episodes, or sessions, available on the regular platforms and typically run 30 – 40+ minutes.
